The flashcards

New Word Card

Use this card to introduce yourself to a new word.

FRONT:

  1. A sentence with a blank
  2. Pictures related to the missing word
  3. A definition of the missing word

BACK:

  1. The missing word
  2. IPA pronunciation guide
  3. The complete sentence

How to study this card

Look at the front of the card

Guess the missing word. It doesn’t matter if you guess the wrong form of the word (e.g. “tyrant” vs. “tyrants”, “run” vs. “ran”)

Look at the back of the card

If you guessed the right word, you pass. If you didn’t guess the right word, you fail (try again).

Definition-Word Card, aka “What’s this?” Card

Use this card to challenge yourself further and improve the speed of your memory.

This card is a little more challenging than the New Word Card because there is no sentence. You have to guess the correct word without the context of a sentence.

FRONT:

  1. Pictures
  2. A definition

BACK:

  1. The word
  2. IPA pronunciation guide
  3. The word in a sentence

How to study this card

Look at the front of the card

Guess the word that matches the pictures and definition.

Look at the back of the card

If you guessed the right word, you pass. If you didn’t guess the right word, you fail (try again).

Sentence Card aka “Listening Card”

Use this card to improve your listening and comprehension. These cards hide the information so that you can listen to it first.  First, you will hear the audio for the Sentence. You must press the buttons to show the information. The card forces you to listen because you have nothing to look at. You listen to the sentence before you read it. This will enhance your listening skills.

**The sentence will not be hidden if there is no audio.

FRONT:

  1. Audio recording of a sentence
  2. Hidden information (Sentence, target word and pictures)

BACK:

  1. Sentence
  2. Target word
  3. IPA pronunciation guide
  4. Pictures related to the target word
  5. Definition of the target word

How to study this card

Look at the front of the card

Listen/read the sentence. You can practice saying the sentence aloud before you look at the back of the card. Ask yourself “Do I understand this sentence?”

Look at the back of the card

If you understood the sentence correctly, you pass. If you didn’t understand the sentence, you fail (try again).

Basic 3 card combo

You can learn new words with card combos. The basic card combo includes 3 cards:

  1. New Word Card – introduces a new word
  2. Definition-Word Card – “What’s this?”
  3. Sentence Card – “Do you understand?”

You don’t have to use 3 cards but we recommend using these 3 cards for a new word with an average difficulty.

“Helper” Cards

If you need more help to understand a new word, there are Helper Cards.

Extra Grammar Cards

If you need to practice grammar, you can use an Extra Card.
